The Gothenburg Adventure!25 Jul 2020In the beginning of july three brave paddlers headed for Gothenburg, lead by Christina Ingemarsdotter. They had six days to start with but some tough winds made them reconsider their planned route. This is Katharinas story about a trip that will make a life-long memory.  With rain pouring and wind howling outside we sat in the office, a.k.a. “The Blue Castle”, to talk about and prepare the upcoming trip towards Gothenburg. Would we really be able to start of with this much wind? Western wind, 14 m/s and gusts of 24 m/s, that´s a serious challenge, even for an experienced kayaker. Eventually we decided to paddle north first and later around the Skaftö Island to get as much shelter as possibly. When the sky cleared up we were ready to go! With a lot of focus and amazing guidance from Christina we made it around Skaftö, camping one night at Blåbergsholmen. On the third day we hade to admit that the wind was too strong, so we stayed the whole day at the island Jonsborg, barely two kilometers south of our starting point! But we had a good time reading, exploring the island and gathering energy for the coming days. Then came three long, delightful days in the kayak. It was not just us who longed to get out on the water, everybody else with a boat also seized the opportunity, which meant plenty of boats to watch out for. We stayed away from the sea fairways as much as we could, paddling sometimes on calm waters between islands and sometimes out on the big, wavy sea. Along the way Christina told us about life and history in the many charming West Coast villages we passed, with white houses and small red huts along the docks. The old town on Marstrand Island was subject to a combined ice-cream-and-cultural-history-stop. All along we kept up our good moods thanks to Christinas delicious cooking, beautiful camp sites and some days a morning swim. The last hours the landscape changed from calm, scenic nature to the busy inlet to the Gothenburg harbor. Huge ferries accompanied us and ships around us being loaded with big containers while we got closer to our final destination; Röda Sten and the Älvsborg Bridge on the edge of Gothenburg city. Clara and Lotta greeted us cheerfully when we reached land and many passersby, enjoying the warm summer evening, gave us and the kayaks curious looks. The Gothenburg Adventure!
Kayak Crew 20206 Jul 2020Dear Kayakers! The kayak season is in full swing by now, we are settling in at our new location at Grundsunds Marina and we have a whole new team setup for this year. As newbies we have Katharina and Dana onboard, joined by our all-time experts Clara and Christina who are ready for courses and longer tours, as always. All of us are excited about this season and eager to meet you and help you get into the kayak and out on the water! If you are a regular visitor at the Kayak Center chances are high that you will meet all of us. If not, we will introduce this year’s crew here for you to get to know us. Newest of all is Katharina, who has left the mountains of northern Sweden to spend the summer with us on the west coast. She loves to spend her free time outdoors, exploring the archipelago on shorter and longer tours to be able to give you good recommendations for your next tour! As a former chef she will also be extra happy to talk to you about food in general and food on tours especially. Language is not a problem for Katharina since she speaks Swedish, Norwegian, German and English fluently. Dana started on June 1st and has been kayaking around the lakes of Germany and recently around Grundsund. She also knows her way to Strömstad and around Orust. It is thanks to her and her talent in marketing and social media that our webpage and blog is kept in a good and updated condition. Practice German or English with her or help her improve her Swedish! Clara is Christinas daughter and thus grew up in a kayak, is a trained outdoor guide and has 10 years of experience at Grundsund Kayak Center a.k.a. Kajak i Grundsund. She loves the longer tours the most and is always eager to share her knowledge and show our beautiful sea and landscape to visitors. When not out in a kayak you might find her jumping around and climbing the rocks around Grundsund or in front of a sewing machine making clothes. Founder and owner of Kajak i Grundsund is Christina, who has built and run the company for 16 years now. She is most often seen on courses and tours where she will tell you everything you need to know about wind, waves and traveling by kayak. If you manage to catch her on land, at the Kayak Center, she is always happy to chat for a bit. On tours she is known for spoiling you with her cooking, you would be surprised by the diversity of meals she can create on an outdoor stove. So come by and rent a kayak, book a course or a tour and we will give you tips on how to kayak with the wind, find good spots for having break or a night in the tent.
